Pack Monday Fair

Pack Monday Fair is held annually in Sherborne on the first Monday after 10th October - old Michaelmas Day. The name is probably a corruption of "pact" meaning agreement as Michaelmas was the time of year when new agreements were made between farmers and farm labourers taken on for casual employment. Although no longer an agricultural fair, it is still a major event in Sherborne with four of the town's main streets becoming full of street traders and food stalls for the day, and a funfair is usually held on the edge of town on the Monday and the days preceeding it.
At midnight on the night before Pack Monday Fair "Teddy Roe's Band" processes through the streets of Sherborne blowing horns and whistles and banging saucepans. This dafes from the 15th century when repairs to the Abbey were carried out by workmen under their foreman Teddy Roe after fire severely dama9ed the building. Once the repair work had been completed, the workers packed up their tools and celebrated by marching through the town blowing on
cows' horns.
